The Truth About Animal Experimentation Millions of animals are used in scientific and medical research, including mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs and other animals. They are locked inside cold barren cages in laboratories across the country. Unfortunately all they can do is sit and wait in fear of the next terrifying and painful procedures that will be performed on them. More than 100 million animals every year suffer and dies in cruel chemical, drug, food and cosmetic tests, and curiosity-driven medical experiments (PETA). The Federal government and many health charities waste precious dollars from tax payers and generous donors on cruel and misleading experiments, even if a product harms animals, it†¦show more content†¦Despite this â€Å"safety testing†, at least 10,000 children whose mothers has taken Thalidomide were born throughout the world with severe deformities. Animals not only react differently than humans to different drugs, vaccines, and experiments, they also react differently from one another (Whitecoatwelfare). The National Cancer Institute (NCI) tested 12 anti-cancer drugs on mice that are currently being used successfully in humans. The scientists studied mice that were growing 48 different kinds of human cancers and treated them with the 12 drugs. They found that 30/48 times, the drugs were ineffective in the mice. In other words, 6 percent of the time, the mouse models with human tumors inaccurately predicted human response. In August 2001, Mark Levin, Ph.D. and CEO of Millenium Pharmaceuticals, presented data at the Drug Discovery Technology Conference in Boston, MA regarding the inadequacy of current animal models in drug testing. In the study he presented, 28 potential new drugs were tested in rats for liver toxicity. Eleven of these drugs were shown to be toxic, while 17 were shown to be safe.
